forking and spooning, what i'd name my thai restaurant

Working in a SE Asian Bistro I've little desire to eat cuisine even remotely similar on my time off. Usually I'm either making my own Italian creations or am at Taste Unique or Artigiano buying some. But when I do want Thai food, real Thai food, "Authentic Thai" food, this is where I go.

The name throws some people, who'd eat at places called "Real Chinese" or "Certifiably Japanese"? I'd have named my Thai restaurant "Forking and Spooning," maybe not that much better, possibly worse, but a nice nod to the utensils Thai people actually use (as opposed to chopsticks).

I'd have kept driving by this place (SE 38th and SE Division), if my Thai coworker hadn't pointed out that this was the closest she's found to what she grew up with. The flavors, the presentation, the portions, and the prices are all awesome here. Forget Pad Thai. Try the Pad Kee Mao, the Soft Shell crab, the Mango Shrimp.

Or want me to pick a dinner for you? Order (see pictures above):

Po Pia Sod - Chinese and Thai fresh roll filled with tofu, shrimp, Chinese sausage egg, cucumber, carrot and green onion. Topped with light sauce and fresh Dungeness crab meat.

Pad Prik King (w/ Pork)- Sweet green bean, red bell peppers, and kaffir lime leaves with Thai chili paste.

Roasted Duck in Red curry Sauce -Eggplant, bamboo shoots, cherry tomatoes, pineapple, bell peppers, basil leaves, tropical fruit and roasted duck in red curry paste.

Get everything at least medium spicy, maybe a glass of their delicious Thai Tea if you like sweet stuff, share (dishes are meant to be eaten family style), and ask for spoons. You're welcome.

  1. I also really like this place. I can't figure out why they aren't busier, because the food is really good and the prices are low. I have given up on ordering take-out though because they never seem to answer the phone. No matter though, I just go eat there.
One thing that's been disappointing at all the Thai places is the lack of the Lime Kaffir leaf. There seems to be a quarantine, and the flavor is noticeably missing from a number of dishes. I hope that this problem gets sorted out soon, because I miss it.

  2. I'm not sure why they aren't busier either. Could definitely use a better website. I think they have a hard time answering the phone cause there's usually only one or two people working the front of house.

Indeed we need some Kaffir Lime leaf.
