a spoon full of mexico makes the outlets go down

Doing some last minute Christmas shopping at the Woodburn Outlets? Forget that, head over to the other side of the 5 to the town of Woodburn. The best Mexican food in Portland is not in Portland.

If you're willing to adventure a little you'll find an oasis of south of the border goodness nestled scenically along the rail road tracks. Blocks of shops and taquerias, the thought "Little Mexico" comes to mind, but there's a lack cheesiness that makes Woodburn more "heard about it, but never been there awesome" than "that's where all the tourists go lame."

Luis 's Taqueria, a family owned establishment, seems to be the most recognized eatery in the neighborhood, and after eating there I can't help but think it's deservedly so.

Warm friendly customer service, not in an annoyingly over enthusiastic way, just real, down to earth, "this is my family's place, welcome to our home." Questions. No problem. Recommendations. Sure. Two epicurious former Hawaii residents who grew up lacking any semblance of great Mexican cuisine. We'll get you straightened out.

I used to have a tendency to always order Carne Asada Burrittos. I've more recently also become a fan of Sopes (a dish foreign to people who grew up in the 808). Here, before one of our once or twice a year visits to the not nearly as cheap as they make it out to be bastions of brand nameness, I was determined to try some of their best dishes, whatever they might be.

The wonderful lady taking order's didn't steer us wrong (text below copied from their menu):

Huarache – The huarache is a larger version of our sopes, smothered in savory red sauce. It includes beans, the meat of your choice, cabbage, cilantro, hot sauce, guacamole, sour cream, & a tomato slice.

Chavindeca - The chavindeca is made with two fresh corn tortillas filled with mozzarella cheese & meat (or substitute rice & beans). It’s topped with sour cream, cabbage, cilantro, onions, grated cheese, guacamole, hot sauce, & a  slice of tomato.

and a sampling of their AMAZING Cerviche which is usually served on Tostadas. Looking at their menu it's clear that we'd just scratched the surface, but it only took a bite or two for us to decide we'd be back. Additionally don't miss the opportunity to grab a bag of crisps and side of sauce on the counter.

The photos don't do these dishes justice, fresh tasting, texturally just right, generously portioned, this wasn't just a good meal, but one of the best we had all year. It's been about a month. and as I'm typing my better half and her sister are making their way to Woodburn, I can't help but be a little jealous. A few minutes into our meal, my much better half, a fairly determined shopper when she needs to be, proclaimed "Forget the outles!" I couldn't agree more.
