yogurt your way

It's simple.

You grab a bowl. You mix and match any of eight froyo flavors. You add toppings. You weigh, you pay, you enjoy.

While I still can't pump our own gas (not that I really miss doing it), self serve frozen yogurt has arrived in inner SE PDX. Located in the heart of Hawthorne, across SE 35th Place from Local 35, Swirl is a locally owned shop (my friend's family in fact) where you can make your wildest yogurt fantasies (at least the one's that are allowed in public) come to life.

Want a chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, cheesecake yogurt topped with marshmellows, M&Ms, raspberries, fruitty pebbles, nuts, and oreoes? No problem. Give your creation a funky name and even the folks at Voodoo may take notice.

I know it's winter, my theory on this is that it's a great time for frozen treats, cause they stay frozen. I used to enjoy my east coast winters by walking around Cornell's quad for hours with a cone of ridiculously rich chocolate ice cream from the on campus dairy bar.

Having opened just two weeks ago, I've stopped by twice and eaten three times. As it's under the radar it was easy to slip in and get my fix (been craving froyo since our restaurant stopped serving it). I'm by no means a fro-yo connoisseur, but I like the Yo-Cream that's used here. And while all the other toppings are fun, I gravitate to the fresh fruit.

Sure there's kinks for them to work out still (hard to read instruction panel on the wall, not so great sound system, etc), but these are minor considerations. I'm a fan, sweet SE location, reasonable prices, friendly down-to-earth staff (Bree is a rockstar), bright clean atmosphere, and most importantly Fro-yo creations limited only by my imagination (or perhaps my free time and my wallet).
