head north for a taste of hawaii

This may sound strange, but to get some ono local grindz (delicious Hawaii regional cuisine) heading north to the 'Couve might be the way to go. Patrick's Hawaiian Cafe has cheesy decor, mediocre macaroni salad, and somewhat soupy long rice, but it also serves up spot on Hibachi Miso Peanut Butter Chicken, Lumpia, Kalua Pig, Lomi Salmon, and Lau Lau.

Having tried a few Portland Hawaiian joints I've been mostly dissappointed (or more accurately unsurprised that they weren't so great). As someone born and raised in Honolulu the best recommendation I can give this place is that it actually tastes like home. While I still haven't tried their Loco Moco, Kalbi, Beef Teriyaki, or Rainbow Chicken Fried Chicken the few dishes mentioned above really were quite good. The Miso Peanut Butter Chicken, a dish I grew up eating but not one I'd ever seen in a restaurant before, was moist, flavorful, and perfectly grilled. The Lau Lau well made, the Lomi refreshing.

So whether you're another former resident, or just someone looking to taste local Hawaii food, stop by, grab a Hawaiian Sun, relax, and enjoy.
